Photographing Children

I was talking to a friend earlier today about photographing children. She just got a new digital camera, and like all of us, hasn't had the time to actually read the manual to figure it out. She commented that she wished her photos would turn out better of her two kids. She and I were together yesterday and I was playing with her new camera and she remarked on how the photos I took were so much better than the ones she took. As I know nothing more than she knows on how to use her camera, I asked her what she liked about the ones I took versus the ones she took ... was it color or composition? Turns out it was more about composition. So, I thought that it might be a good idea to post a couple of things I do when I'm taking photographs -- of children or really anything else. These photos were all taken yesterday as we spent the afternoon playing.

1. Get close. I love to fill up the frame with one image. I get close, close, close to my subject in order to make the photo more interesting. In this photo, I don't mind that a bit of the top of his head and a bit of his chin is cut out. By filling the entire frame with his expression, you really get caught up in his happy moment.

2. Look for the unnoticed details. I love this photograph. I intentionally shot it so the focus was on the cherrios and the top part of his head was cut out of the picture. You don't need his whole face to really get the essence of the moment.

3. Get down on their level. When photographing children, get down on their level. Yes, that might mean sitting on the grass or kneeling, but a photo is so much more interesting when you get their perspective. If I had taken this photo from my perspective, you would have missed out on the fact that we were in this long row of strawberry plants. He still remains the primary subject of the photo, but you really get a sense for how he was picking those strawberries.

4. Throw out all the rules. :) I love this one -- both the rule and the photo. Does it matter that its blurry? NO! In fact, a perfectly focused photo, in this case, wouldn't have worked as well. What works for this photo is you get a sense for the movement and play that is happening at this moment. You really feel the freedom he is feeling by flying!

And, the best tip I can give you is to keep shooting. With digital cameras, you have so many opportunities to try, try, try again. Don't worry about the posed shots, capture your everyday moments. :)

February Email Newsletter

The February Email Newsletter was sent out tonight. If you are not on the distribution list and would like to be, you can sign up using the newsletter link at the right on the bottom. I typically send 1-2 email newsletters a month with notification of specials and promotions. Its a good way to be up to date on the latest news at KarenLeslie Photography. :)

Sweet Baby

After posting a preview of my latest newborn session last week, I wanted to come back and post a few more from this beautiful session. This little nugget was soooo good for us and just slept (like a baby) through most of the session. I just love all the images.

If you know anyone having a baby, send them my way. Also, photo sessions make great baby shower gifts -- especially if you're getting a gift from a group. I will provide a customized gift certificate you can give with your gift to the expectant parents.

Newborn sessions are too much fun and I just love to do them. :)

KarenLeslie Photography Specials

Now is a great time to reserve a portrait session for your family -- especially because I've got several great specials running. And, for reference, you can see any of my current specials by going to my website at www.karenleslie.com and going to the tab called "specials".

1. Maternity and Newborn Package: This is a really great special that I'm running until the end of July 2007. Basically, its a 2-for-1 special: when you book a maternity session with me, you'll get a newborn special for free. Maternity sessions are typically done between your 28-34 weeks of pregnancy. Then, as soon as your baby is born I'll come back and do a newborn session in your home. Newborn sessions are best within 14 days of the babies birth -- the sooner the better because brand newborns are sleepier. :) With this special, you save $250!

2. Mini Photo Session at Leu Gardens: On March 3, 2007, I will be at Leu Gardens doing portrait mini sessions. These sessions are 30 minutes and I will provide you with 20-25 proofs after your mini session. For a cost of $175, you'll get the 30 minute mini session, 1-8x10" print, 2-5x7" prints and a set of 8 wallets. There are 6 spots available and must be reserved in advance. Call me at 407.340.8088 or email me at karenleslie (at) mac (dot) com if you are interested.

3. Referral Program: Clients can earn prints or a free session by referring their friends. For each referral that reserves a portrait session, the old client AND the new client gets a free 5x7" print. For every 5 referrals, the client receives a free portrait session.

To reserve a session using any of these specials, or for additional information, please visit my website at www.karenleslie.com, email me at karenleslie (at) mac (dot) com or call me at 407.340.8088.

6 Days

It is the morning of your life and
all your dreams are just beginning.
May you touch fireflies and stars,
dance with fairies, and talk to the
man in the moon. May you grow up with
love and gracious hearts and people who
care. Welcome to the world, little one,
it's been waiting for you.

Today, I had the distinct pleasure to photography my youngest client yet -- 6 days old. He was a wonderful baby, who slept throughout most of the session. Isn't he beautiful????

I was so excited about this session that I had to come home immediately, download the files and start editing. I don't often get session photos on my blog this quickly, but I just couldn't wait to share this one. :)

I just wanted to add that this photo is done on location, at the client's home using all natural light from a window. We found a good, well-lit location in her upstairs family room and let the light shine in through the windows. He is sleeping on a piece of black velvet. :)

Back by Popular Demand: Mini Sessions!

The Holiday Mini Photo Sessions were such a success that I've decided to do another one in March. This time the mini sessions will take place on Saturday, March 3rd at the beautiful Leu Gardens in Orlando. The gardens are just beautiful this time of year! This is a great opportunity to get your Easter pictures. :)

There are only six available session times, so call me (407.340.8088) or email me today (karenleslie@mac.com) to reserve your spot. A $25 deposit reserves your spot and the rest is due on the day of your mini session.

Admission to Leu Gardens is included.

I hope to see you on March 3rd! :)

EDIT: Going Fast! Five of the six sessions are already reserved. The only remaining session is at 2pm. Call me at 407.340.8088 or email me at karenleslie@mac.com to reserve the last session.
